Created by the Generalitat Valenciana and Law 2/1996, of 27 December, classes began in fall 1997. The Miguel Hernández University of Elche, whose main campus is located in the city of Elche, has 4 campuses in all (Elche, Sant Joan d'Alacant, Orihuela, and Altea). There are 75 university buildings, its campuses extend over almost 95 hectares, and the university's constructed surface area is about 210,000 square meters. Currently, there are 19,899 enrolled students, of which 16,200 are full-time. Since its founding, over 29,400 students have graduated from UMH programs. The 2018 university budget is 109,626,641 €.
The Miguel Hernández University has 7 faculties (Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Experimental Sciences, Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences of Elche, Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences of Orihuela, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, and Faculty of Medicine) and 2 schools (School of Engineering of Elche and School of Engineering of Orihuela).
Regarding academics, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche offers 25 bachelor's, 53 master's, and 13 doctoral programs that are official and accredited by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA). Furthermore, the UMH also offers many of its own Continuing Education programs, which include 27 University Expert, 16 unique UMH masters, 6 Advanced University Diploma, and 6 University Specialist programs). The UMH occupies the fifth position in the ISSUE Ranking of Teaching, Research, and Technological Development (U-Ranking 2017) among Spanish universities (Fundación BBVA-Ivie). The total number of journal publications (papers, books, chapters, abstracts, documents) was 1,263.
The Miguel Hernández University maintains 267 international agreements with other universities. During the 2015/16 academic year, 215 outgoing UMH students participated in international mobility programs and 68 outgoing UMH students did so nationally.
There were 234 foreign incoming students who participated in international mobility programs and 33 who participated in national mobility programs. As for the Erasmus+ program, the countries that hosted large numbers of UMH students during the 2015-16 academic year included Germany, Italy, Poland, France, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic.
