Excellence Award by the Valencian Foundation for Quality

Excellence Award by the Valencian Foundation for QualityThe Valencian Foundation for Quality (FVQ) awarded the Miguel Hernández University of Elche its Excellence Award in its first edition on November 21, 2005. This prize is awarded to a public or private organization that, subsequent to attaining Gold- or Silver-level Recognition for Excellence by the FVQ, stands out because of its activities as a benchmark within the Valencian Community and its commitment to supporting activities related to quality, excellence, and innovation that help increase business competitiveness in the Valencian Community.

This recognition for quality management at the UMH is based on the EFQM Excellence Model, one of the quality models used most among European institutions and businesses. This model has been adopted as a reference for all public administrations in Spain and, in particular, within the Valencian Community it has been used as an assessment method for the public sector for many years.

The EFQM Model has served as an essential guide when planning strategy and defining actions to be implemented at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche. This model has also encouraged management teams and allowed them to share responsibilities and achievements.

The Excellence Award is further recognition for the Miguel Hernández University and joins other awards and distinctions earned throughout its history. Included among these are the Seal of Excellence (Gold Level) 2005-2009 by the Valencian Foundation for Quality (FVQ), European 500+ Gold Level Seal of Excellence by the European Foundation for Quality Management in 2004, ISO 9001:2000 Certification for R&D Management in 2003, ISO 9001:2000 Certification for Curriculum Design and Teaching Plan Development in 2002, Award for Best Management Practices by the Excellence in Management Club (CEG) in 2001, and ISO 9001:2000 Certification for Student Internships in Businesses in 1999.

Award for Efficiency 2000 Clademark. Círculo de EconomíaOn June 8, 2010, the management team at Clademark (Círculo de Economía) presented the Miguel Hernández University of Elche its Efficiency Award 2000. Among others, the reasons for supporting this decision included:

• The commitment to quality, with the clear example of the significance of being the first Spanish public university to earn quality certification, is even more evident when considering that the auditing entity was the prestigous and singular AENOR (positioned within its sector as the most demanding auditor of compliance with ISO standards).

• Its commitment to the mission of providing a distinct and comprehensive university education, emphasizing its practical aspects, through strong relationships with more than 900 partner businesses and institutions, something which constitutes a record within the Spanish university panorama, and by which the UMH has already received several awards.

• Due to providing internships to more than 1,500 of its students, and having one of the highest percentages of job offers to those students in the very same organizations that hosted them.

• For assistance in finding professional employment for many students belonging to the first graduating classes thanks to contacts since 1997 (the year classroom instruction began) with more than 3,000 businesses and institutions from diverse economic sectors, both within the province of Alicante and neighboring ones, as well as the rest of Spain.

• The UMH Occupational Observatory is a nonprofit service directed at students that has excelled in its four years of existence due to its development of numerous initiatives aimed at encouraging training, adapting students to the business world, promoting entrepreneurship and job placement, as well as editing publications.

Chamber of Commerce Award 2000 for Vocational Training

Chamber of Commerce Award 2000 for Vocational TrainingThe UMH Occupational Observatory is a nonprofit service directed at students that has excelled in its four years of existence due to its development of numerous initiatives aimed at encouraging training, adapting students to the business world, promoting entrepreneurship and job placement, as well as editing publications.

The Observatory's praiseworthy work, which has already resulted in signing more than 1,000 agreements with businesses for UMH student internships, has been recognized by the Alicante Chamber of Commerce, which has given it one of its awards for Vocational Training. The UMH's Rector at that time, Jesús Rodríguez Marín, showed his satisfaction for the award, and indicated, "We define the University as public, practical, and advanced. That is one of our patterns of differentiation and, despite the institution's tender age, we are the second public Spanish university with, proportionally, the most students carrying out internships."

Working with the Vice Rectorate for Economic Affairs, the UMH Occupational Observatory, which has received numerous awards, has a unique virtual program that allows businesses and students to be connected via the internet.

The UMH is the first public university to obtain quality certification by AENOR and it is the first to revalidate this with the ISO 2000 Standard, which currently only six businesses within the Valencian Community possess.

First Prize for Best Practices by the Quality Management Club

First Prize for Best Practices by the Quality Management ClubThe Miguel Hernández University of Elche, and in particular the Service of Quality Management, was presented the Best Practices Award by the Quality Management Club in 2001 (4th edition). The award's aim is to encourage and favor the exchange of information, knowledge, and learning experiences based on Best Management Practices between businesses and institutions established in Spain, highlighting and recognizing those that by their universality can serve as a model of reference and for improvement.

The jury was composed of Elvira Rodríguez, State Secretary for Budget and Expenditure (who presided), Elaine Arozamena, Managing Vice President of Korn/Ferry International, Lucila Gómez-Baeza, Deputy Secretary-General of the Círculo de Empresarios, Miguel Ángel Manzanero, Vice Rector at the University of Burgos, among others.

The exercise presented was entitled "Leading by Example. How to Implement Process Management and Management by Objectives at a Public Institution: the Experience of the Service of Quality Management at the UMH." Its intent was to implement Process Management and Management by Objectives while developing self-evaluation systems that allow organizations to improve their performance. With this aim, the EFQM Model was chosen.

To begin this process, the Service of Quality Management was chosen for it being ideal. The reason for this was obvious: it was the service going to provide support to the other University administrative units to continue with this process and it was very convenient that it could "lead by example" in terms of self-assessment, process design, and introducing Management by Objectives.

This award recognizes the focus on introducing quality in public institutions and the results achieved to the present day by leading organizations in quality.
