Description

Discrete random (Bernoulli, binomial, and Poisson) and continuous (normal and associated) variables. Statistical inference in one and two populations: point estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing. Statistical inference in K populations: analysis of variance of a factor. Contrasts based on chi-square distribution: goodness of fit, homogeneity, and independence. Nonparametric inference in one (goodness of fit and randomness), in two (homogeneity and independence), and in more than two populations (homogeneity).

Professional interest

This subject provides the knowledge and basic aptitudes to confront present subjects of numerical character in the degree. There is destined to promote the capacity of numerical abstraction and the comprehension of key and present concepts in day after day, since it are the variability, the probability, the value of the information that is observed in a systematized way, the censuses and samples, the esteeming ones and estimations, the procedures to contrast and to check theories. It provides the basic tools to understand the present information in information observed from descriptive numerical and descriptive adapted analyses. It affects on the concept of index, for power like that to understand the numerous indexes (to the consumption, of prices, of mortality, ") introduced already in the daily terminology.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

The final exam will consist on two parts: Theoretical and practical part (65%). Test exam Practical part (30%): The examination will be done in the computer lab. Evaluation of tutorial-seminars (5%). Exams may be tipus test, problems to make or a combination of both. For pass the subject is necessary obtain a minimum of 5 points in each part.
