The Resolution of 17 December 2007 by the Secretary of State for Universities and Research, by which the Council of Ministers Agreement of 14 December 2007 is published, sets out the conditions for curricula of degrees that qualify graduates to practice medicine (as a regulated profession). The Resolution establishes that the Bachelor's in Medicine must consist of 360 credits. A curriculum has thus been designed according to this criterion that is structured into six academic years with 60 ECTS credits each, with each year divided into two 30-credit semesters.
The courses and subject matter are structured in the following modules:
- MORPHOLOGY, STRUCTURE, AND FUNCTION OF THE HUMAN BODY
- SOCIAL MEDICINE, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH
- DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES
- HUMAN CLINICAL TRAINING
- TRANSVERSE AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
- SUPERVISED CLINICAL PRACTICE AND FINAL DEGREE PROJECT. This module includes Supervised Practice and the Final Degree Project. The former consists of independent clinical rotations at clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare centers with a final assessment of the skills that incorporate professional values, healthcare communication skills, clinical reasoning, clinical management, and critical judgment, as well as healthcare related to the most prevalent problems in the areas of medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and other clinical areas. The latter is the Final Degree Project, based on one or various subject(s) in the syllabus.
The different modules are divided into subjects that are distributed by semester throughout the six years of the program. All core subjects (60 credits) are given in the first year. This is done to provide the student with the necessary training to be able to undertake the required subject matter taught in the remaining years of the program, as well as the electives, which are given in years 4 and 5, and in which the student must earn 24 credits. The final year is devoted entirely to completing the required Supervised Clinical Practice (54 credits) and Final Degree Project (6 credits). The latter may be started earlier provided the student has earned 180 curriculum credits.
The program's electives are indicated in the Courses section, and are part of the Transversal and Professional Competencies Module. This module can be completed either by taking these electives or by recognition of a series of activities such as internal and external internships, languages, self-study, and UMH Continuing Education courses, professional work experience, attending University workshops and conferences, etc. For complete information regarding recognition, click on the following link: http://estudios.umh.es/reconocimiento-creditos/grados/
