Description

Psychosocial management of emergencies, programs for improving skills in combating stress in parties, action protocols in psychological first aid, and proposals for preventing psychological distress in shocking situations or intervention in critical care units, among other contents.

Professional interest

The future career in health psychology has to know in depth the characteristics of the emergency and disasters psychology, including tasks of training, intervention and research. The intervention in this area includes psychological care tasks of the participants, and victims and their families, and advising managers of the crisis. Thus, the aim of the course is to provide students of the main strategies of intervention in this area.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out psychological research, assessments, and interventions on aspects of behavior and activities of persons that influence the promotion and improvement of overall health, provided that such activities do not require specialized attention by other health professionals.

Specific competencies

Demonstrate interpersonal communication skills and the handling of proper emotions for effective interaction with patients, their family members, and caregivers in the processes of identification of the problem, its assessment, communicating the diagnosis and psychological intervention and monitoring.
Write appropriate psychological reports for their recipients.
Formulate working hypotheses in research and compile and assess information critically for the resolution of problems, applying the scientific method.
Understand the action framework of the general health psychologist and know how to refer to the relevant professional specialist.
Develop work from the perspective of quality and continuous improvement with the necessary capacity for self-analysis for responsible professional practice.
Know how to communicate and how to do so with other professionals, and master the skills necessary for working on teams and with multidisciplinary groups.
Possess the knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of health personnel regarding the confidentiality of information and the protection of personal patient data.
In-depth knowledge of different assessment and intervention models in the field of general health psychology, as well as the ensuing techniques and procedures for addressing behavioral disorders and psychological factors associated with health problems.
Design, develop, and, where appropriate, supervise and evaluate psychological intervention plans and programs in terms of the psychological evaluation and the concurrent individual and social variables in each case.
Knowledge of current regulations in the Spanish health sector.
Implement activities that promote and educate on individual and community psychological health.

Conocer el contexto de actuación del psicológo en el ámbito de las emergencias, catástrofes y cuidados críticos
Conocer las características de las personas que se encuentran en situaciones de crisis
Conocer y saber gestionar la intervención psicosocial en situaciones de emergencia.
Realizar una abordaje terapéutico de las situaciones de inicio del duelo
Conocer y valorar críticamente el perfil de competencias del interviniente en situaciones de catástrofes y emergencias
Conocer y saber aplicar técnicas de comunicación eficaces en situaciones de crisis y duelo

Methodology and grading

Grading

The final grade is obtained as follows: (1) developing written test type 5 questions about the contents explained in the sessions as well as the documentation and recommended bibliography for each teacher. The test will be marked out of 10, being necessary to obtain a minimum score of 5 to approve and pondering this amounting to 60% of the final grade. The exam will be held at the end of the matter. (2) Activities in the sessions (up to 20% of the final grade) and (3) Development of an intervention project conducted according to information provided by the teacher in charge at the beginning of the course (up 20%). The work of preparing the project will be delivered the day of the official announcement of the subject (June-September).
