Physiology of human reproduction, knowledge relative to pregnancy, childbirth, normal and abnormal puerperium, and its correct attention.

Professional interest

The knowledge of physiology and pathology of pregnancy, childbirth and normal and pathological puerperium must be acquired by all primary care physicians, as frequently will need to collaborate in pregnancy control, to participate because of intercurrent problems, or perhaps in the follow-up of the postpartum period. Besides, it allows them to act with diligence and knowledge if their participation is required by woman's necessity or emergency incidents.

General competencies

Understand and recognize the effects, mechanisms, and manifestations of disease on the structure and function of the human body.
Understand and recognize causative agents and risk factors that determine health status and disease development.
Comprehend and recognize the effects of growth, development, and aging on the individual and his/her social environment.
Understand the basics of action, indications, and efficacy of therapeutic interventions based on available scientific evidence.
Acquire and develop a medical history that contains all the relevant information.
Perform a physical examination and mental health assessment.
Be capable of formulating an initial diagnosis and establishing a rational diagnostic strategy.
Recognize and deal with immediate life-threatening situations and those others requiring immediate attention.
Establish the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, applying principles based on the best information available and under conditions of clinical safety.
Indicate the most appropriate therapy for the most prevalent acute and chronic processes, as well as for patients in terminal stages.
Raise and propose appropriate preventive measures for each clinical situation.
Acquire appropriate clinical experience in hospitals, clinics, and other health care institutions, under supervision, as well as basic knowledge of patient-centered health management and the appropriate use of tests, medications, and other health system resources.
Listen attentively, obtaining and synthesizing information relevant to the problems affecting the patient, understanding the content of this information.
Write case histories and other medical records that are comprehensible to third parties.

Specific competencies

Knowledge and use of the principles of medicine based on the (best) evidence.
Pregnancy, normal, and pathological delivery.
Puerperium.
Sexually transmitted diseases.
Examine a pregnant woman and monitor her pregnancy.
Assess the risk/benefit ratio of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Understand the indications of biochemical, hematological, immunological, microbiological, anatomopathological, and imaging tests.
Know how to use drugs appropriately.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01to know and participate on the attention to pregnant women, included high risk pregnant women.
02to learn and be able to participate in the monitoring and medical management of normal delivery and detection of complications.
03to be able to follow the postpartum period and puerperium, and provide the correct tips for this stage, as well as to detect its complications and management.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Learning agreement: Develop active learning through an agreement between the teacher and the student containing commitments for what will be learned, how monitoring will take place for that learning, the set period of time, and the evaluation criteria.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.

Grading

The final exam will include three tests:
-Exam of key questions. A maximum of three key questions with very short answer, that have been selected from a list (previously available for students) and that will have been clearly answered in class.
The answers must be correct to consider the exam that will consist of the following two tests.
-Test (value 50%) between 40 and 65 questions with four options (four wrong answers will reduce one correct).
-Exam of 5-10 short-answer questions with limited space (value 50%).

So, to pass the exam is required to pass de key questions, to obtain a 5 or more in the exam (average of test and short questions), and hospital rotation (certified by signatures), and presentation of the note-book of practice.
The note-book of practice evaluation, reports of tutors, and especially assistance to class and continued evaluation contribute to upload final qualification.

Correction criteria

In the test-exam three wrong answers suppress one correct.
Book of practices will be evaluated as portfolio, and will be evaluated according to the activity carried out, the objectives achieved and the degree of success in adquisition of contents and competences.
Presence in classroom, demonstrated through the random controls of assistance to be carried out, contribute to as far as one point in the final qualification, depending on the interest shown in them.
