Professional interest

This subject focuses on control systems, which are widely used in industrial processes, telecommunications and aviation. Students will address the control of both theoretically and practically, to implement such systems in platforms now widely known, as Arduino. Students can apply their knowledge to work with this type of systems in both private companies and research by completing their profile as a multidisciplinary engineer.

General competencies

Knowledge about basic material and technologies that enable learning new methods and technologies, as well as providing tremendous versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to resolve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and to communicate and transmit knowledge, abilities, and skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activities of the technical telecommunication engineer.
Knowledge for performing measurements, calculations, assessments, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, work plans, and other similar work within the specific field of telecommunications.
Ability to work on a multidisciplinary team and in a multilingual environment, and to communicate, both in writing and orally, knowledge, procedures, results, and ideas related to telecommunications and electronics.

Specific competencies

Ability to carry out the specifications, implementation, documentation, and fine tuning of equipment and of electronic, instrumentation, and control systems, considering both the technical aspects and their corresponding regulatory standards.
Capacity to apply electronics as a support technology in other fields and activities, and not only within the field of information technology and communications.
Capability to design analog and digital electronic, analog-digital and digital-analog conversion, radio frequency, power, and electrical energy conversion circuits for applications in telecommunications and computing.
Ability to understand and utilize feedback theory and electronic control systems.

Methodology and grading

Methodology

Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

There are 2 evaluation methods:
- Continuous evaluation (only in the official call of February): The evaluation will be carried out by means of a written exam with problems (50% of the mark), the delivery of reports of the practices carried out in the laboratory (35% of the mark) and the delivery and exposure of a job (15% of the mark). Additionally, deliverable exercises will be done in class to obtain up to 0.5 extra points on the final grade.
- Traditional evaluation (for all the calls): The evaluation will be carried out by means of a written exam with problems (70% of the mark) and the delivery of reports of the practices carried out in the laboratory or a theoretical / practical exam on them (30% of the mark).

Assessment test characteristics

- Continuous evaluation (only in the official call in February):
  - Written exam (4-5 problems): 50%. The duration of this exam will be 2 hours and a half.
  - Delivery of reports of laboratory practices: 35%.
  - Delivery of a work and its presentation: 15%.
  - Delivery of exercises in class: up to 0.5 extra points on the final mark (the 2-3 class exercises will be done during the hours of continuous evaluation on Mondays and will be delivered during the same). The dates will be agreed during September.
- Traditional evaluation (in all calls):
  - Written exam (4-5 problems): 70%. The duration of this exam will be 2 hours and a half.
  - Delivery of internship reports made in the laboratory or theoretical / practical exam in the laboratory: 30%. The duration of this exam will be 1 hour.

Correction criteria

- The student must obtain a final mark equal to or higher than 5.0 to pass the subject.
- It will be necessary to obtain a mark equal to or greater than 4.00 in each part to be able to average with the rest.
- The approved practices, either with the delivery of reports or with the theoretical / practical exam in the laboratory, will be keep during the following academic year.

Additional requirements

- During the exam the sheet with formulas used during the classes will be provided.
- Do not forget to bring a blue or black pen, calculator and ID for the exam.
- The examination does not allow the use of smart devices such as mobile phones, tablets or others.
