Professional interest

Optical communication systems represent not only a basic tool for long-haul data transmission, but also a powerful alternative for dsitribution and access of wideband services. In this course we study the basic properties of the guided channel, its transmission, reception, distribution and multiplexing elements, the performance evaluation of single-channel systems both in analog and digital formats, and an introduction to multiplexed systems.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Knowledge about basic material and technologies that enable learning new methods and technologies, as well as providing tremendous versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to resolve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and to communicate and transmit knowledge, abilities, and skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activities of the technical telecommunication engineer.
Knowledge for performing measurements, calculations, assessments, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, work plans, and other similar work within the specific field of telecommunications.
Capacity to analyze and assess the social and environmental impact of technical solutions.
Ability to work on a multidisciplinary team and in a multilingual environment, and to communicate, both in writing and orally, knowledge, procedures, results, and ideas related to telecommunications and electronics.
Knowledge, understanding, and the capability for applying the necessary legislation throughout the professional practice of a telecommunications technical engineer, and the ability to deal with mandatory specifications, regulations, and standards.

Specific competencies

Capability of applying techniques that telecommunications networks, services, and applications are based on, in environments fixed and mobile, personal, local, and long distance, using different bandwidths, including telephony, radio broadcasting, television, and data, from the point of view of transmission systems.
Ability to analyze components and their specifications for guided and non-guided communications systems.
Ability to select circuits, subsystems, and systems of RF, microwaves, radio broadcasting, radio networks, and radio determination.
Ability to select antennas, equipment and systems of transmission, guided and non-guided wave propagation, by electromagnetic, RF or optical means, and the corresponding management of the radio electric space and frequency allocation.
Ability to construct, operate, and manage telecommunications networks, services, processes, and applications, understood as systems for capturing, transporting, representing, processing, storing, managing, and presenting multimedia information, from the point of view of the telematic services.
Capacity to autonomously acquire new knowledge and techniques suitable for the conception, development, or use of telecommunications systems and services.
Capability to use communication and computer applications (office automation, databases, advanced calculation, project management, visualization, etc.) to support the development and use of telecommunications and electronic networks, services, and applications.
Ability to use computerized tools in the search for bibliographic resources or information related to telecommunications and electronics.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01To know and specify the properties of optics as a guided communication channel and its limitations in power, bandwidth and binary tranmission rate.
02To know and specify the basic elements for distribution and multiplexing of optical signals.
03To known the basic devices for emission, and also the basic subsystems for modulation and transmission of optical signals, in particular their modulation bandwidth and noise performance.
04To known the basic devices for detection, and also the basic subsystems for reception of optical signals, in particular their spectral propetties, detection bandwidth and noise performance.
05To know the basic schemes for regeneration of optical signals and also the amplification devices.
06To evaluate the performance of single-channel links over fiber, both in digital and in analog format, point-to-point of based on passive distribution, with regard to its limitations in power and transmission bandwith.
07To describe the basic arquitectures of the electronic, optic of scubcarrier multiplexed fiber systems.

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
