Professional interest

The Analog Communication Systems constitute simplest mean of transmitting a signal through a communication channel. Nowadays, the most usual modulated analog signals are restricted to commercial radio broadcasting, private push-to-talk transmission systems, and certain radionavigation systems. In turn, baseband analog transmission is currently employed in voice transmission over telephone channels, in audio systems and, in general, in systems and subsystems devoted to analog signal processing. In addition to the intrinsic interest of the analog Communication Systems, aspects such as the characterization in power and bandwidth of signal and channels, the basic modulation procedures, the limiting factors in transmission (attenuation, interference, distortion and noise) and the strategies to overcome them, and also sampling techniques, constitute basic tools in digital communication and in signal processing systems.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Knowledge about basic material and technologies that enable learning new methods and technologies, as well as providing tremendous versatility for adapting to new situations.
Capacity to resolve problems with initiative, decision making, creativity, and to communicate and transmit knowledge, abilities, and skills, understanding the ethical and professional responsibility of the activities of the technical telecommunication engineer.
Knowledge for performing measurements, calculations, assessments, appraisals, surveys, studies, reports, work plans, and other similar work within the specific field of telecommunications.
Ability to work on a multidisciplinary team and in a multilingual environment, and to communicate, both in writing and orally, knowledge, procedures, results, and ideas related to telecommunications and electronics.

Specific competencies

Ability to construct, operate, and manage telecommunications networks, services, processes and applications, understood as systems to capture, transport, represent, process, store, manage, and present multimedia information, from the point of view of transmission systems.
Capability of applying techniques that telecommunications networks, services, and applications are based on, in environments fixed and mobile, personal, local, and long distance, using different bandwidths, including telephony, radio broadcasting, television, and data, from the point of view of transmission systems.
Capacity to autonomously acquire new knowledge and techniques suitable for the conception, development, or use of telecommunications systems and services.
Capability to use communication and computer applications (office automation, databases, advanced calculation, project management, visualization, etc.) to support the development and use of telecommunications and electronic networks, services, and applications.
Ability to use computerized tools in the search for bibliographic resources or information related to telecommunications and electronics.
Ability to analyze and specify the fundamental parameters of a communications system.
Ability to assess the advantages and disadvantages of different technological alternatives in the deployment or implementation of communications systems from the point of view of signal space, disturbances, and noise, and analog and digital modulation systems.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01Describe the basic elements of a communication system.
02dentify the basic properties of analog signals and communication channels, together with their time and frequency description.
03Undestand the analog modulations (linear and angle) together with their advantages and drawbacks, in particular those regarding power, bandwidth and modulation/demodulation procedures.
04Recognize the sampled descrption of an analog signal, its spectral properies, the basic types of practical sampling and interporlations and its use in analog pulse modulations.
05Identify the limiting factors in an analog communication system, the quantifying measures and the compensating procedures, including linear equalization systems, and systems with nonlinear distortion.
06Understand the basics mathematical description of noise in communicaiton systems and its practical meaning.
07Evaluate the performance under noise of the analog modulations.

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.

Grading

Examination consisting of theory and practical issues and applied problems (90%) and reports on the laboratory sessions (10%).

MIDTERM EXAM

The midterm exam is assessed on 5 points, in order to pass the exam, a minimum score > or = 2.5 points ir required.

The partial exam consists of two parts:

First part, a test with theoretical and applied questions (to a total of 2 points, with three or four options from which one is right, wrong answers are not penalized), and
Second part consists of 2 problems with various sections each, for a total of 3 points.

There is no need to get a minimum score on each part (issues / problems) to pass

FINAL EXAM (ordinary)

The final consist of two partial assessed on 5 points each. Each part, in turn, consists of two parts:

First part, a test with theoretical and applied questions (to a total of 2 points, with three or four options from which one is right, wrong answers are not penalized), and
Second part consists of 2 problems with various sections each, for a total of 3 points.

There is no need to get a minimum score on each part (issues / problems) to pass

FINAL EXAM (extraordinary)

In the calls extraordinary examination is evaluated on 10 points and no partial division. It will consist of the usual two parts:

First part, with theoretical and practical test type questions (to a total of 4 points, with three or four options from which one is right, wrong answers are not penalized), and
Second part, consisting of 3-4 problems with various sections each, for a total of 6 points.

There is no need to get a minimum score on each part (issues / problems) to pass

CORRECTION CRITERIA

1. In the correction of the test the correct answer will be evaluated.
2. In the correction of the problems it will be assessed: (a) the formal and logical development and the presentation, (b) the calculation and correct numerical solution, and (c) discussion of the results and conclusions regarding questions in the statement.
3. problems that are not explained and minimally developed will not be assessed.
4. Presentation to the test involves the evaluation and the subsequent completion of the call.
5. The requirements to pass the course: 1.To have attended to all laboratory sessions. 2. Pass the exam.
