Professional interest

The management of Databases is a discipline with a formative character whose interest for future IT professionals is mainly:

- Access modelling and retrieval of information stored in a digital media.

- Access and retrieval of information organised in Relational databases.

- Access and retrieval of information organised in databases correctly normalised.

- Access and retrieval of information using appropriated Database Manager Systems.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Capacity to use tools for solving problems within the field.
Critical and analytical skills in the area of computing.
Ability to define, evaluate, and select hardware and software platforms for the development and implementation of computer systems, services, and applications, according to the knowledge acquired by the specific technology of information technology.
Capacity to design, develop, and maintain computer systems, services, and applications using software engineering methods as a tool for quality assurance, according to the knowledge acquired by the specific technology of information technology.
Knowledge about basic materials and technologies that enable learning and developing new methods and technologies, as well as those that provide great versatility for adapting to new situations.

Specific competencies

Ability to analyze, design, build, and maintain applications in a robust, secure, and efficient manner, choosing the most appropriate programming paradigms and languages.
Knowledge about and application of the features, functionality, and structure of databases that allow for their appropriate use, and the design, analysis, and implementation of applications based on them.
Knowledge about and application of the tools necessary for storing, processing, and accessing information systems, including those web-based.

02Correctly apply the fundamentals for representing information through the relational model.

Methodology

Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.

Grading

ORDINARY CALL (JUNE):

The final grade of students will comprise 50% for the part of Theory and the other 50% for the Practical part. Both parts will be evaluated through a final exam with questions on the program of the subject. For the Theory to average the Practice, at least a score of 5.00 in each part must be obtained. Moreover, it is a necessary condition for passing the practical part to submit on time and pass two practical proposals published during the course.

SPECIAL CALL (SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER):

The final grade of students will comprise 50% for the part of Theory and the other 50% for the Practical part.
