Professional interest

The course under the name of Administration and Business Organization is a basic course of 6 credits, which according to the European Credit Assignment in the UMH equals to 150 hours. It takes place during the second semester of the first year of studies.
When the students have access to this course they have already had contact with its studio area through the course "Fundamentals of Business Organization" which takes place during the first quarterly of the year. In this previous introductory course, they have a first contact with the business reality and also they got the basic ideas which constitute the fundaments of the structure and business functioning and which are going to be developed along the different courses of the degree.
After this first contact, the course Administration and Business Organization, has as primary objective that the students acquire enough knowledge to understand the philosophy or set of criteria that supports the Business Direction and Management System which addresses it from a global perspective point of view.
Following this theoretical framework the program deals, in first place, with a series of general concepts or fundaments of the business direction and management process which contextualize and conditions the action of the Business Direction in the redeeming of its first task "The Business Administration" that means, assuring the start-up and achievement of the business objectives through an interactive process which comprehends the phases of planning, organization, human resources integration, staff management and control. In second place, there is the study of one of the phases of the process in depth, the Organization Function or group of decisions and actions which result in the design of the organizational structure under which operates the business units.
With the above, it is pretended to develop some skills which will train, in general, to look, to assess and use relevant information to cover their necessities and objectives; to develop the ability of thinking and to use their abilities to confront and solve the challenges that life presents, especially, in the working environment and inside the heart of the organization. In a specific way, to make the future candidates capable of collaborate with co-workers, managers and any other person in their working environment, developing managerial skills and learning to use at maximum their potential.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Ability to identify the structure of governments, businesses, institutions, public organisms and organizations in general, as well as for interpreting the regulations and procedures necessary for carrying out projects and other activities.
Capacity for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling systems and processes within a framework that guarantee respect for the values, rights and basic principles of the legal system, business competitiveness, protection and conservation of the environment, and sustainable development in the corresponding field.

Specific competencies

Ability to analyze the relationship between business and its economic environment, distinguishing between the functional areas of production, investment, financing, and marketing, as well as accounting techniques to obtain the financial situation, with special emphasis on small- and medium-sized businesses.
Capacity to relate knowledge about the operation and registration of business activities, especially in cases of small- and medium-sized businesses.
Capacity to develop and manage the design process and project management.
Ability to integrate into any functional area (in a business or large organization), performing management tasks with ease.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

01To know and understand the importance of the administrative process of the organizations. Identify the role of planning, organization, direction and control as the main phases which are part of that process.
02Understand the nature of the managerial job, setting apart the characteristics of its tasks and the different roles that the manager plays performing the administration of his unit.
03To think over the different abilities that the manager needs to properly perform his work.
04Getting familiar with the models and dominant paradigms in the administration area and business management
05To think over the importance and influence that some elements of the exterior and interior environment exercise over the activities and results of the business organizations. To know the concept of business culture and to study the business administration problems in depth in the international and global environments.
06To analyze the business administration problems in variable environments. To know and think over the convenience of applying Organizational Development Processes.
07Comprehend the importance and the need to organize and coordinate the work. Identify the different coordination mechanisms and assess their application along the development process of the business.
08Identify the main parameters of organization design and assess the convenience of their application attending to contingency facts which condition the effectiveness of the organizational design.
09To know the main organizational structure and identify the parameters design which characterize them and the contingency facts under which they operate effectively
010In front of a certain case study, the student would be able to design and update the organization structure making it suitable to the organization development and outline them through an appropriate organization chart; thinking, besides, over the suitability or not of the utilization of some design parameters according to the contingencies.

Methodology

Case studies: Learning through the analysis of actual or simulated cases in order to interpret and resolve them by employing various alternative solution procedures.
Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Lecture: Pass on knowledge and activate cognitive processes in students, encouraging their participation.

Grading

The evaluation process can be done in two ways:

1. Final evaluation: an examination will be carried out on the date officially established for each call in which the total content of the program will be evaluated. It will consist of three parts: Test (60%), questions (25%) and case study (15%).

2. In addition, a continuous evaluation process can be followed, consisting of the practices carried out in the classroom and collected by the teacher in the classroom will be evaluated throughout the course (15%). That's 1.5 points in the final note.

The student who passes the continuous evaluation, that is, who obtains 0.75 points of 1.5, will be exempt from carrying out the case study in the final exam of June, September and December of the same year, since it corresponds to the tasks carried out in the classroom

Correction criteria

Test 60%, questions 25%, case study 15%

Additional requirements

- It is essential to attend the exam provided with the DNI or identity document.
- Entry to the exam will not be allowed once the statements have been distributed.
- All electronic devices must be stored and turned off during the test.
- Once the exam is handed in, it is considered as presented, not being able to leave the room before the first 15 minutes.
