Description

This course covers the bases of pharmacokinetics, pharmacovigilance, pharmacoeconomics, and therapeutic management of drugs in certain acute pathologies and exacerbated chronic pathologies in pain therapy and sedoanalgesia during any stage of life.

Competencies and learning outcomes

General competencies

Know and apply the severity scale of the most frequent disease entities in medical emergencies.
Communication skills with patients, family members, and their social environment. Know how to express bad medical news.
Know the chain of survival in medical emergencies.

Specific competencies

Know the guidelines of action for establishing the correct clinical diagnosis in the most frequent clinical emergency situations.
Relate therapeutic actions with severity levels.
Know and apply action protocols for possible organ donation after asystole for care outside hospitals.
Understand the consequences and the initial action protocol in NBC (nuclear-biological-chemical) risk situations.
Know the action protocol in primary transport and transfer of NBC (nuclear-biological-chemical) victims.
Awareness of new forms of bioterrorism.
Know the types of pain assessment scales.
Know the sedoanalgesia protocols in terminal patients outside the hospital.
Recognize and understand psychological reactions to trauma.
Know the basics of psychological assistance in critical situations.

Objectives (Learning outcomes)

The clinical pharmacology course aims to teach students the concepts and basic methods of rational therapeutics, in such a way that they are applicable to current therapeutic resources and the future, in order to improve the care of patients through the use of drugs in the most safe and effective way. These concepts will guide to the selection of drugs and treatment regimens with the best foreseeable risk/benefit ratio, and the individualization of both depending on the characteristics of each patient. For this purpose there will be a series of theoretical activities and practices, whose objectives are exposed so detailed in this program in order to facilitate the understanding of the student about what clinical pharmacology teachers expect to learn the course.

Methodology

Cooperative learning: Develop active learning through cooperative working strategies among students and promote shared responsibility to reach group goals.
Problem-based learning: Develop active learning strategies through problem solving that promote thinking, experimentation, and decision making in the student.
Project-based learning: Realization of a project to solve a problem, applying acquired learning and promoting abilities related to planning, design, performing activities, and reaching conclusions.
Solving exercises and problems: Exercise, test, and apply previous knowledge through routine repetition.
