Academic goals
The Cyborg Experimental Centre has been accredited by the Consellería of Universal Health System and Public Health of the Generalitat Valenciana as a training center for Valencian Community non-health professionals who work outside the health care sector in the use of automated & semi-automated external defibrillators. Such accreditation is a result of a resolution by the Deputy Director of the Valencian School for Health Education on March 11, 2019. The contents in this program are those described in a resolution from October 17, 2017 by the Director General of Health Care at the Universal Health System and Public Health of the Generalitat Valenciana. This kind of training is included among the objectives of the University Hearth Protected program at the UMH.
Learning objectives
This program provides theoretical and practical knowledge on providing basic life support with automated and semi-automated external defibrillators by people who are not health professionals.
Facilities and schedule
The training for each group lasts 4 hours and consists of:
Theoretical Module: 90 minutes (all group students)
Theoretical Module examination (multiple-choice)
Assessment survey of the Theoretical Module
Practical Module: 2 hours and 30 minutes (with two smaller groups)
Evaluation and debriefing of the Practical Module
Assessment survey of the quality of the Practical Module
THEORETICAL MODULE
Recognize non-traumatic sudden cardiac arrest.
Define sudden cardiac arrest.
Assess the meaning of the acronyms NCPR and CPR.
Describe the chain of survival (vital links).
Summarize the importance of:
Predicting the time elapsed before starting CPR NCPR.
Assessing the location surrounding the environment.
Analyzing the state and characteristics on the ground.
Establishing a safety perimeter.
Determining the initial position of the victim and that of the rescuer.
Looking for signs of life and airway obstructions.
Determine the location and access to external defibrillators located on the campuses of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.
Basic life support and neuro-cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Assess:
Level of consciousness.
Breathing.
Situation of the victim - DOES NOT respond to stimuli but is breathing normally.
Asking for help. Calling 112. Activation of the emergency response system.
Providing basic information.
Recovery position.
DO NOT leave remain with the victim.
Situation of the victim - DOES NOT respond to stimuli and DOES NOT breathe normally:
Airway opening procedure.
Asking for help. Calling 112. Assessment of items.
Performing manual chest compressions with a lone rescuer.
Rescue breathing. Barrier devices.
Characteristics and action protocol with external defibrillators.
Define the characteristics of an external defibrillator: Automated, automated external defibrillator (AED), semi-automated external defibrillator (SAED), and external manual defibrillators.
Describe the positions on the chest surface: pads, self-adhesive electrodes, or those with paddles.
Types of lethal cardiac arrhythmias and Action Steps.
Defibrillable/NON-defibrillable.
Action Steps in defibrillable cardiac rhythms:
Safety measures in electric defibrillation.
Report results to the emergency information and coordination center (CICU).
Action Steps in non-defibrillable cardiac rhythms.
Define the concept and establish the Action Steps in special situations:
Anaphylaxis. Anaphylactic reaction.
Cardiac arrest at sporting events.
Water rescues. Drowning (immersion and submersion).
PRACTICAL MODULE. BASIC LIFE SUPPORT WITH EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS
Presentation of case by instructor.
Identification and Action Steps:
Obstruction of the airway by a foreign object.
Identification of sudden cardiac arrest. Action Steps:
Asking for help. Calling the emergency response service. Assessing items.
Position of the victim and characteristics of the support surface.
Safety perimeter and position of the rescuer.
Situation of the victim - DOES NOT res pond but is breathing normally.
Assessing signs of life.
Putting victim in the recovery position.
Situation of the victim - DOES NOT respond and DOES NOT breathe:
Airway opening maneuvers.
Performing CPR with a lone rescuer:
External manual chest compressions.
Rescue breathing. Barrier devices:
Relieving the rescuer.
Performing CPR with two rescuers:
External chest compressions.
Rescue breathing.
Compression to breathing ratios. Synchronization.
Presentation of the case by the program instructor.
Identification of potentially lethal rhythms of sudden cardiac arrest:
Defibrillable/NON-defibrillable.
Early external defibrillation. Characteristics and Action Steps:
Chest surface.
Placement of electrode patches paddles on thorax.
Sound indications.
Safety measures.
PAUSE.
PRESENTATION OF SURVEY RESULTS.
END OF PROGRAM.
